THE NEW VIGIL HOUSE

Excerpts from "Halfway to Heaven" article
The New SPC Vigil House, is a four story building with medical and geriatric clinics, intensive care unit, a chapel, hanging gardens, rooms of various sizes , with elevators and other amenities needed by the aged Sisters. The nuns are taken cared of by full time midwives and nurses, physical therapist, psychologists, physicians and aids so that no sisters will be left unattended. This way, the sisters can truly rest and be treated properly as they prepare to go to the Eternal city where there will be no more waiting, but just behold the bliss and blessing of heaven.

Our Vigil House, is not only the ‘pre-departure place’ of your old teachers and friends but also our source of prayer-power, our hot-line to heaven. This is a bigger place where they can be given special care while they do their ministry of praying for you and your loved ones and the cares of the world.
Your compassionate heart will never go unrewarded, for the good Lord can never be outdone in generosity.
Your old teachers and friends will always keep you in their loving prayers and sacrifices.

"House our tomorrow
Soak it with sunglow
Seal it with your rainbow
Sink our woe
Ask not where we go
We go to pray for you."
Sr. Bernadette Racadio, SPC

A PAULINIAN EVENING FOR A CAUSE

On October 14, Saturday, the Paulinians will be presenting an evening of dancing, a fund-raising mini-show, charitable event to benefit the elderly, sick and ailing nuns of St. Paul de Chartres Vigil House. This event will take place at the Almansor Court, 700 S. Almansor Street, Alhambra, CA 91801. The Vigil House is the beneficiary of all fundraising activities of the Paulinian Global Foundation, a non-profit, tax-exempt organization organized in the United States by the Paulinian alumni.

The old Vigil House was formerly located in Quezon City, where they retired peacefully and spent their last days on earth. The place was originally built for 40 nuns and was packed with 70 nuns. They have moved to a new place and 94 nuns are currently housed in a new comfortable retirement home befitting their stature.
The new Vigil house is a 4-story medical geriatric facility located in Taytay, Rizal. The Vigil House needs your help in providing medicines and supplies for the sick nuns and for the general upkeep of the place.
Most of St Paul QC HS Batch 82 began their kindergarten roots at St. Paul College Pasig circa 1970 and later moved on to QC and Manila for High School. We have been molded by the nuns since kinder until high school, some up to college.
We wouldn't be where we are today if not for the St. Paul nuns. SPQC President Sr. Mary Angela Barrios and St. Paul Pasig Principal Sr. Miriam Raymund Victoriano are currently living at the Vigil House.
Since they have given up all their possessions to live a life of servitude, we owe them at least whatever blessings we have right now and make their dying days as comfortable as possible. Now is the time to give back.

VIRNA LISA PERFORMS AT THE EVENT

The performer of the event will be Ms. Virna Lisa Loberiza Mananzan, the Paulinian who sang the famous EDSA revolution song “Magkaisa”. Virna Lisa is now married to a banker and is a busy mom to 3 children and lives in the Washington DC metropolitan area.

"When we were in Las Vegas for our mini-reunion, I thought of coming up with a Karaoke night to somehow raise more money and of course, find a good excuse to see each other and reminisce some more of the good old times.....Most of us are very busy. Having a full time job, profession, kids and a household to take care of. I am no exception to this. But one thing stays in my mind, and I would like to share this. We only have one lifetime to spare. I am blessed to be here in the US living a comfortable life. I don't have excess funds. But I do have some spare time and I have talents that I can and will share for a good cause. I encourage you to do the same."

SPECIAL GUEST PERFORMER MS LOUIE REYES

Excerpts From Philippine Post magazine article

LOUIE REYES: LIVIN LA VIDA IN AMERICA

She began her professional career with an all female singing trio called Babsie, Chit and Louie, established herself as an accomplished performer with the popular New Minstrels, recorded and released several albums, and received standing ovations for her stage and theater performances in the Philippines and abroad.

As the Philippines' Queen of Jazz, she performed with several mainstream jazz artists such as Joe Sample, Bob James, David Benoit, Noel Pointer and Dianne Reeves. She won international acclaim by bagging the grand prize trophy at the Seoul Song Festival, placing second at the First Asean Song Contest, and the Pacific Song Contest in Canada. Then, in 1992, she bagged the Green Room Theatre Award, Australia's version of the Tony, as Best Female Artist in a Supporting Role for her performance in "The King and I." The award was something she never expected, and never even knew she was nominated for, until the organizers called her from Australia to relay the news. And although she didn't get to receive the gold medallion in person (organizers sent it from Australia), the award cemented her status as one of the Philippines' best performing artists.

As a Filipino musical artist, Louie Reyes had attained the kind of success and respect most of her contemporaries in the entertainment field could only dream of. She also had it all: happily married to Cesar de la Fuente, her co-singer with the New Minstrels who eventually became her manager when she decided to go solo, and two adorable sons who seemed to have inherited their parents' musical genes.

Louie, Cesar and their two sons migrated to the US in 1997. Within the karaoke-crazed Filipino-American community, Louie has found a steady stream of students eager to learn the rudiments of singing, either professionally or simply as a hobby. Also known as "voice teacher to the stars," Louie holds the distinction of being vocal coach to popular entertainers Joey Albert, Gino Padilla, Janice de Belen, Angelu de Leon, Donita Rose, Gelli de Belen, Dawn Zulueta, Nora Aunor, among others. As soon as she set foot in California, Louie shed her own star image and donned her teacher's cap, a profession she now lives by as she conducts voice classes for aspiring Fil-Am entertainers.

"I still manage to do a couple of shows a year -- a privilege I must say, since some of my colleagues have already retired. I am thankful for every chance to connect with an audience because it is always a pleasure to meet people from all walks of life. And of course, applause does warm the heart..." she admits with candor.

"The Fil-Am audience here is a little different -- they are somewhat kinder. They are just eager to see artists from 'Pinas whom they miss; and they will savor every moment. It must be like being able to eat manggang hilaw with bagoong, unrestricted."
